Newsletter: Prez Sez

It feels like winter has found us here in far south western South Dakota. The busy outdoor days of summer and what was a beautiful fall – interrupted by an early snow fall in late October only to return to sunshine and temps in the 70s seem to be behind us and today as I write this – it felt bitter out there.
A great time to turn to cranking. I always feel that the short and cold days are there to allow ourselves to slow down a bit and use the hours we can’t be outside to turn to our crafts and hobbies. The holidays are looming and it is time to get busy cranking gifts and items to sell.
I have been working on a few new to me machines – one of them a Harley Kaye Marsland – a semi automatic knitter of sorts. A heavy industrial looking beast really – and yet such a smooth and quiet knitter, it is absolute pleasure to crank on it.
I have been working on a good pattern for fingerless mitts – with a thumb. I know there are some patterns out there but each of them had something that left me wanting change. I will be writing that pattern up to share in the next newsletter.
When I write my piece for the newsletter, I like to look back through the archived newsletters and so I did this time as well and came upon the entry from October/November of 2016. What caught my eye were the words of then President Victoria Jicha:
“The Conference Committee has been chugging along, and you can meet them on page 4. See Conference Announcement below. The Board has been experimenting with various meeting venues. We used to use Google Hangouts and then we tried Skype. There always seemed to be connection issues with those two so we are now exploring Zoom. I’ve got to say – it is all magic. That board members from 4 different time zones can meet online and video conference is pure magic, and when it works it’s a beautiful thing.”
It made me smile thinking about our most recent “Conference” aka the Annual Membership Meeting committee and the awesome work they did. I am ever so thankful to work with such a great group of people – on this committee and on the board of the CSKMS. And the notes about Zoom and board members from 4 different time zones meeting on line being pure magic. Having 200 members watching, interacting, playing CSM Trivia, enjoying demos – that is pure magic!
I think planning for the next member event will be under way soon.
Stay warm, crank happy!
